Back in Black Adoption Event PLUS How You Can Earn Money for YOUR shelter or rescue group!

Hi, everyone ... it's me, Finn!  Mom and I were talking last night, (as we like to do ... ), and she happened to mention that she had heard of this great event sponsored by Best Friends that promotes the adoption of black cats (and dogs).  From now (actually the event started on August 15th, but Mom, as usual, is a few steps behind the times) through September 17th, if you adopt a black dog or cat at one of the list of participating shelters you can find here, you will save 50% off the usual adoption fee.  Mom personally feels that it's almost blasphemous to put a price tag on a living being, but she also thinks it's a great idea to promote more awareness about how much harder it is for black dogs (and especially black cats) to get adopted compared to cats and dogs of other colors.  I agree.  So today's post will be devoted to this event, and also from now until the 17th, we'll be spotlighting one black dog and one black cat each day along with whatever else we post about.

Now ... what if you want to help not just black cats and dogs, but any cats and dogs in your local shelter or rescue group who so desperately need it, BUT ... you can't adopt one right now?  This is a situation that a lot of animal lovers find themselves in, because the truth is, the plight of homeless animals is bigger than any one person ... and as much as people like my mom might want to ... you can't take them all in.  So here's what we're going to do.  Now through September 17th, tell your friends  (in the Blogosphere and IRL) to stop by and leave us a comment with their name and the name of the shelter or rescue group they most wish they could help ... and on the 18th, we'll enter all the names into one of those Randomizer thingies, and then we'll donate a dollar a comment (up to max of $100) to the winner's shelter or rescue group of choice in the winner's name.  So spread the word ... and don't forget to leave YOUR comment!

Now, take a look at these Black Beauties Mom and I found at Petfinder.com!

I have heard that black dogs and cats have many more problems getting adopted, so this is so good to see.

We definitely know that black Greyhounds have a harder time getting adopted! What a great event!

I know Quad Cities Greyhound Adoption can always use help, and I can vouch for what a great group they are since they helped me find my home!

I was adopted from Project Purr, a feral cat rescue organization. I personally think black cats are the best!

What a great idea. I sure hope these animals are able to find some great furever homes.

That's a really wonderful idea. The black dogs and cats really do stay in the shelter the longest. I hope they get a whole bunch of them outta there quickly!

Me tinks black doggies and kitties are b-u-t-ful!

Wow! What an amazing idea - and so generous of you! As a black dog, I always love to see folks supporting my black furred buddies!

We would love to see your donation go to Ashley Owen Hill and her lucky dog's at the Lucky Dog Rescue Blog. This little rescue in Meridian, MS is doing all they can to help pit bulls in need!

What an awesome promotion. Our other Elderbull love at the shelter is black, so naturally we think this is a great idea! We will be sharing via facebook too. Thanks for your generosity!!

Well, as my favourite ever dog is a black lab/Belgian shepherd cross, I will back this enthusiastically! Good luck! (Black cats bring luck, you know!)

My husband and I own a black cat and a black dog. We wouldn't trade their black fur for any color under the sun.

We would love to see Change of Heart Pit Bull Rescue receive the generous donation. They're doing an awesome job in Southern California.

Finally, someone who is doing something amazing to combat this terrible stereotype that us humans have created! You are the voice for those who have no voice. Wonderful work!

What a great idea! It makes me so sad that black animals are so often ignored and passed over because people are superstitious or worried about dark fur showing up on furnature. These are amazing, lucky animals that deserve good homes. And for the record - I don't notice any more of my cat's black fur than my other cat's white fur.

I'd love to see the donation go to the Animal Welfare League of Montgomery County, Md!

Great idea! I have a black dog too and she's awesome - I can't imagine her being stuck in a shelter!

I just love that!

So silly how certain certain looks have more trouble getting adopted than others. My local shelter had a slew of brindle pit bulls recently that were taking forever to get adopted. They ran a special adoption promotion saying "Brindle is the new black!"

Anonymous said...

What an awesome idea! We adopted our black pitmix last year, and love him to pieces. OUr local shelter is even running a special right now-- Back in Black! It's half of the adoption price of black cats and dogs. It's horrible that this is even an issue, but props to you for recognizing it and addressing it!

Thank you so much for doing this! I think it's awesome. Personally, I love black fur, it doesn't show up as much on my clothes and furniture! ;-)

A very cool topic indeed! We first learned about "Black dog syndrome" when we adopted Xena, our all black retriever mix. She was a fabulous companion and an excellent "mom" to the rest of our furry family--canine, hare and feline.

Good luck with your event. I'm glad Kolchak Puggle sent me over.

Our Buster sat in a shelter for three years waiting for someone to see past his black little old man grumpy face. He's fantastic.
One Tail at a Time are participating in Back in Black so I'll keep my paws crossed that I win $100 for them! Thanks so much for doing this.

This is such a good idea. We love black cats and have three that live here. They came and moved in with us. We hope you make a lot of money on this commentathon. Thanks so much for talking about this subject. It is one of our Mom's favorite subjects. Take care.

I would love to donate to Linn County Dog Control in Oregon, which is where I adopted my dog from. They are a small county-run shelter most people don't even know about, even the people living in the same town.

Great event!! But Halloween is the worst time to have black cats for adoption! Our ASPCA will NOT adopt out any black cats because of the potential abuse from sickos out there that like to sacrifice animals.
Count me in on this event!

K-Koira said...

Our humane society normally runs black and orange cat specials this time of year. The potential of abuse to these cats is more of a major rumor than anything based on facts, since even on special, the people would have to go through filling out an application, having a home screening, and paying an adoption fee.

Tucker The Crestie said...

@ Pattie & K-Koira, I have heard both sides of this. Some rescues won't adopt black cats out in the month of October at all. Others feel that their screening process is adequate to protect the animals from being adopted by sickos. I'm not really sure where I stand on it. In an ideal world, I'd let the adoptions go through, but retain ownership of the animal until November 1st.

What a wonderful idea. Beryl isn't quite black, but she is mostly black. I don't have a US favourite shelter but I'm sure I could find a deserving Greyhound one if we are lucky enough to win! Well, they're all deserving, aren't they!

I've never understood why people don't want black cats. I thought they were supposed to be lucky. The LOTH's mum has a black cat called Mickey and he's been lucky because he's now 20 and still going strong.

Black greyhounds are beautiful two. Our friend Jane has two.

Hurray and the Back to Black adoption drive and good luck with the commentathon.

Love and licks, Winnie

What a really neat campaign. I've always told myself if and when I get another cat to join my brood it would be black.

Thanks for visiting my blog, I'll be sure to come back to this one.
